The cost of a dental examination can vary depending on the circumstances. A standard dental appointment can cost around $200. Check-ups can cost up to $400 if your dentist discovers any serious problems during the appointment. Costs can be higher if various X-rays are needed to determine the best course of treatment.

Medicare offers dental rebates to both children and adults under certain circumstances.

Children can be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). A child must be between the ages of two and 17 in order to qualify for Medicare and Family Tax Benefit A.

There is a limit of $1,000 per child every two years, and the benefits include cleanings, fissure sealing, fillings, and extractions. The plan does not cover orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry.

Also covered by the program are adults who have a Commonwealth Health Care Card, a Commonwealth Pensioner Concession Card, or a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. Conditions and treatments vary from state to state.

Although it’s never too early for your child to establish a relationship with his or her dentist, there are some guidelines you can follow to determine when the time is right. In accordance with the Australian & New Zealand Society Of Pediatric Dentistry, children should visit their dentists at least once a year from the age of 1 to 2 years old, twice a year from the age of 2 to 6 years old, and once every six months from the age of 6 to 12 years old.

A trip to the dentist can be uncomfortable for an adult, but it can be a terrifying experience for a child. In spite of this, children need dental care just as much as adults.

Early dental visits are important for many reasons, including:

  • The main causes of poor oral health are unhealthy diets and lack of dental care. Changing poor oral hygiene habits is difficult without regular dental visits.
  • Keeping your mouth healthy can prevent heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems, and tooth loss.
  • Finding a dental practice in which your child feels comfortable will benefit both of you in the long run.

You may want to see a dentist during the night if the pain is unbearable. Unfortunately, most dental offices are closed at night. You can learn what steps to take by visiting the Victoria Emergency Dental Care page.

Choosing a dentist for your family is an important decision. It is vital that you find a dentist you feel comfortable with since your family dentist will be your long-term partner when it comes to your oral health. Here are some questions to ask yourself before selecting a dentist:

  • What are the hours of operation for the offices? Is it convenient for your schedule?
  • Is it easy to get to the clinic from work or home?
  • Where did the dentist get his or her education and training?
  • What is your dentist’s approach to preventive dentistry?
  • Is the dentist a regular attendee of conferences and continuing education courses?
  • What does the office look like? Is it clean, neat, and orderly?
  • Do you find that the dental staff is friendly and willing to answer your questions?
  • Do the dentist and his staff wear gloves and other protective gear when treating patients?

In the event that you experience any of the following symptoms, you should visit your dentist immediately.

  • When a toothache persists for more than 1 to 2 days
  • The severity of the toothache interferes with your day to day activities
  • Opening your mouth wide causes pain, fever, or earache

It is important to identify and treat dental infections appropriately in order to prevent dental infections from spreading to other parts of the face and skull, as well as to the bloodstream.
